Help remembering a book

Back in the 90's I read, I think a trilogy of books where the setting took place on a planet that was broken up into several planes floating in the air. For the life of me, I can't recall any more than that. It was in the fantasy genre, and I think this planet may have been the Earth in the future. I'm unsure of that, however.

Does that ring a bell for anyone?
