the bittersweet

dreaming tasting the bittersweet between birth and death
to reach and clutch the thorn and to fail to grasp the rose
suffer in the embittered heat no chance to catch a breath
a blinding light of being born into a soul we soon dispose
sucking on the pricked finger relishing the flavor of blood
to gaze upon the unreachable and wonder at all of desire
remnants of the wicked linger we listen to the axe’s thud
faced by those unteachable casting the valuable in a fire
searching the deepest crevice to answer questions of life
to expel the dark seeking seeds to the dry barren ground
discard the needless and precious off the blade of a knife
measure out wants and needs those both lost and found
clinging to the ripened tongue as if the rarest of all fruits
to dispense of words that shun while gnawing at the roots
