the enduring

today streets are lined in cripples widows and orphans
haunted faces asking for why as fingers clutch at ghosts
once a flood now mere ripples water shines in distortion
as high above sad angels fly far below dire demons roast
behind thick walls and gates royalty lies in great leisure
rejoicing in the gifts of the gods expected as is deserved
counted on the good side of fates the reward of pleasure
sparing no expenses for a facade that they be preserved
tonight the heroes are sleeping exposed to cold and rain
festered wounds cannot heal nor cracked broken souls
mumbled prayers are entreating those sane and insane
the chilled hearts do not feel warmth from fading coals
at midnight time has meaning yet that will soon change
abandoned husks are teeming the thoughts to rearrange
