On this day, January 21, 1950, George Orwell died.

George Orwell died OTD in 1950. This quotation, from 1946, is worth remembering:

“Power-worship blurs political judgement because it leads, almost unavoidably, to the belief that present trends will continue. Whoever is winning at the moment will always seem to be invincible.”

George Orwell - Wikipedia

Eric Arthur Blair (25 June 1903 – 21 January 1950), better known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English novelist and essayist, journalist and critic. His work is characterised by lucid prose, awareness of social injustice, opposition to totalitarianism, and outspoken support of democratic socialism.

I am engaged in a personal, non-profit freestyle project experimenting with my web-writing and communication.

I was an academic scientist. I still am, but working out my own path cautiously both in science (which has been taking a real hit) and navigating an increasingly complex society as I would.

I like to spend most of my time alone without technology or people (no offense to technology or people) ;-/.

I don’t have any patience with this concept I have heard in recent years “kayfabe”. It has its origins in 4chan/8chan culture..that jokey alt right stuff. I have seen way more of that irl than I cared for. But well I wouldn’t know how to do that.
So if I don’t want to sound insane :
“OMG I DONt know what that is. Go do it elsewhere you loud pests”

;-/. Not a fan of human generated noise. I don’t like being a drag but I would like some spaces where i have a say over the use of my resources ie private human life not theatre and rollouts of lousy tech Fugazi regulation style (if that’s even a real paper and not an AI Sokal hoax thing).

Well okay. My own reaction is joky and similarly serious alt left. I don’t mind jokes as long as you know how to deal with people who are not fools even if they don’t “code and hack”. But the state (my local state and centre) can’t get away with permitting that sort of stuff as if it’s a cultural vaccine. I don’t know if that is a thing-but that sounds like a bad enough idea to be a real thing these days. And have its own damn awful channel or some nightmarishly tacky and grotesque thing. I can “generate”’horrible business and other ideas on a horrifying endless loop as I drearily think of how human life could be commodified.

I use gallows humor since you gotta temper exasperation with a spoonful of sugar etc. Besides I am not exactly such a perfect person that if I am not careful..

The cleaning station analogy is how I think of the “still wild” parts of the web (DU, Wikipedia, specific writers like Yasha Levine or Evgenia Kovda or this journal Current Affairs for me). Maybe Salon Mag and this one news site run by an old colleagues husband. Because of botnets I think it is unwise to name any new site that could get attacked. Like DU was with the AI crawler issue from this geographic region where I live. It reminded me of a MAGA guy I read about in the Ottawa Citizen and Doge and Musk outing an actual source of intelligence. They are known for doxxing random private people.

Asking for mockery honestly and if you come up with stuff that stupid then you should play it through seriously like an adult and not a partisan dimwit. Fight fair one way or another.

It is really hard to suffer fools.

Orwell is co-opted by both sides though he clearly belongs to the left just not in stupid ways.

I have been experimenting with my web writing. Orwell is one of my favoring writers because he cuts straight through to the substance.

I don’t have the patience to deal with influencers, bad jokes ad nauseum, industry shilling etc. And I don’t believe in the power of the internet to tell stories.
That’s the stuff any serious satirist alive today would mock not shill. And you can’t have it both ways.

It is what causes an existential crisis in some one I respect like Yasha Levine or Evgenia Kovda. They are cool. Like the Catcher in the Rye thing. They are the only people I have seen who are public figures that one could imagine talking to or knowing.

Orwell would probably appreciate the absurdity of “breaking the fourth wall” becoming a concept in the lives of normal anonymous citizens who are aware that security research (which I prefer to this bs about story telling and using the internet to teach. Or well very indirectly).
I am posting this on the web but it’s not..I am very territorial and when I am even struggling I don’t want to prop up the bullshit job of some sobriety peddling type etc who sells VR as an alternate therapy covertly..not that such a person exists but they could and I had one or two brushes with such shills and no.
2021 was the last time and no.

I always appreciate the difficulties faced by the Christian Bale type of person who dislikes the fruits of celebrity that are forced on actors who are only interested in the craft.
Sadly the inverse of that is if you are a serious private person it’s this tense negotiation in these new foul realities

I have been working with my web-writing style..its thematically very Orwell relevant some of what I have been struggling with.

I am editing out tangential screeds. I had posted about automatons in another thread. And edited out a tangential stream of consciousness:

Automatons, free will and other existential stuff - probably on the human mind more these days on average than the historical norm. I don’t really buy influence, but definitely learned helplessness when people don’t feel in control of their lives.

Experimenting with my web-writing style with errors-please excuse the ugly learning process on display ;-/.. I have been trying to edit out tangentiality and keep these in my journal to refer to later. All for private use. Just testing the waters in the anonymous internet user world. Object lesson in preserving the as yet not extinct, truly anonymous (unless my few colleagues were to find that yet again I got stuck in something inane..), internet user who can use free speech without getting doxxed or harassed and not performatively (absurd that word even has to be used as often as it does these days) but with real tension as I do dislike /distrust tech companies and this internet economy..too complicated to explain. And endless takes on Capcha and Human or Not
-this social Turing game thing ;-/).

This gets at some of the same themes, but it is part of the relentless stream of normalisation:
https://aeon.co/essays/the-sovereign-individual-and-the-paradox-of-the-digital-age

Whereas I back the stuff someone like Yasha Levine does, where he ..I see a method in his madness intentional or unintended because he is one of the few people who make sense to me.

I am all for privacy for people like me whose only real issue is marijuana’s grey legal status which means a genuinely authoritarian state working with tech cos can confuse truth and lies and even say it is like a vaccine for the surveillance state protecting sexual harassers and sleazy deregulation at the expense of ordinary vocal anonymous citizens who are guilty of nothing at all.
I look cynically at creepy rot like this:
https://www.inverse.com/article/53442-this-person-does-not-exist-has-spawned-a-host-of-a-i-powered-copycats
“This person doesn’t exist”
Such worthless rot.
