(15,948 posts)I read his book "Mr. Hockey" despite my enduring distaste for The Detroit Red Wings, though, and enjoyed it.
I could've been little Bobby or Stan, but noooo.

Marcel Dionne was another hockey great (much greater than Pronovost).

(5,934 posts)He could play better when he was drunk than most other players could while sober.
Cynthia Cooper, but I live in Houston, so might be a bit biased. She has the hardware.
Yogi. He has the hardware too.
42. Every time. Unlike TSF, he actually served.
Oscar Robertson.

(210 posts)To average a triple double over an entire season. I think only one other has accomplished the same. And O did it before the shot clock and 3 point line. Making it that much more impressive.

(10,617 posts)1. Jackie. I believe the limited records show Dumpy hit .138. In high school.
2. Ruth. Ohtani has only played 7 1/2 years. Ruth out hit him by 60 points over a 20 year career, with a little better power numbers. Ruth won 96 games to Ohtanis 38 in a similar time period.
3. Not a hockey guy.
4. Love Yogi; a hero of my youth, but gotta go with Bench.
5. Willie. It would have been interesting to see what would have been if the Mick had been healthy, but he wasnt. His numbers on one leg were still phenomenal.
6. Ill go with LeBron.
7. Ali. It was a trip hammer that had knives in it.
8. Again, no idea.

(2,526 posts)Ruth averaged .342 for his career. Ohtanis highest season average is .310. Ruths career WAR is a stratospheric 182.8; Ohtani is currently sitting at 43.8. Ohtani is the best player in baseball today but he has a long way to go to get his career stats into Ruthian territory.
The Gordie Howe hat trick is a game where a player has at least one each of a goal, an assist and a fight. Interestingly, Howe had only two such games in his career. Without checking the alltime list, I will say Brendan Shanahan is the career leader in this category.
This is close but I give the nod to Bench on the strength of his 10 Gold Gloves. Pudge Rodriguez deserves to be considered in this discussion, also.
Mays- he has more than 100 more homers than Mantle and over 400 more RBIs. Also, Mays has over 800 more base hits and more than 1500 total bases than Mantle. He also dwarfs Mantle in WAR. Duke Snider is a legitimate HOFer but he benefitted greatly from the cozy confines of Ebbets Field which was tailor made for his left handed stroke.
I am no expert on basketball but Bill Russells Celtics won 11 titles in his 13 years. Russell also won 5 MVPs which was 1 more than Wilt Chamberlain and matches Jordan. He was also on two NCAA national title winning teams. He is my choice as the NBAs GOAT. As for Jordan vs. LeBron, I give the nod to Jordan as he could just take over ball games in clutch time.
Holmes- that powerful jab of his simply punished opponents. Holmes to me is underrated but that would likely happen to any heavyweight champ following in the footsteps of The Greatest.

(59,412 posts)post. I agree Pudge Rodriguez should've been on the list of great catchers. Another poster suggested Carlton Fisk also.
I also agree on Larry Holmes. Tough following Ali. Lary Holmes did have that great jackhammer jab though, different from Ali's fast and stinging one.
Isn't it someting that Ohtani is the best in the game today but his numbers so far aren't close to the greats back in the day?
brush
(59,412 posts)Ohtani's as he's considered, along with Judge, about the best in the game right now.

(293 posts)1. #42 over 45/47 any day of the week and 42 times on Sunday. Jackie was arguably the most important athlete of the 20th century
2. The Babe. Ohtani's great and fun but Ruth was the greatest ever and had he remained a pitcher would've likely still gotten to the Hall
3. A goal, an assist and a fight in the same game. Gordie oddly only had 2 in his career
4. Bench as a player, Yogi when it comes to memorable lines
5. Willie for actual overall career. Mick was more talented - likely the most talented player ever. Knee injuries and drinking leave us wondering what could have been
6. LeBron. 40000 points, 10000 rebounds and 10000 assists? Freaky numbers we'll likely never see again
7. Holmes. Ali was a better overall fighter but Holmes' jab was nuts
8. Cheryl Miller. Easily the best of the Miller family who came along too soon for the WNBA and to be a part of the modem game

(59,412 posts)It's still amazing to me that Ruth's career batting average is .342. Most players would die for one season of hitting .342.
Did you ever hear of the story of manage Walter Aulstion have Hank Arron fill out the line-up card for an all star game back in the '60s. Hank had Clemente leading off, Cepeda batting second, Mays third, He hit clean up, McCovey, Musial and Earnie Banks to follow.
Imagine all that talent on one card.

(2,526 posts)She was fantastic at USC- those teams won two national titles and she was a four-time All-American. Still 3rd all-time in NCAA womens basketball history in rebounds. I would have loved to see how she would have done in the WNBA.
