saying ban is 'required in this case'At long last, nearly two years after its initial discovery, the Michigan sign-stealing decision is in. The Wolverines avoided a postseason ban, but were hit with a series of fines that could exceed $35 million, plus an additional game suspension for head coach Sherrone Moore.
In a document sent to the school Friday, the NCAAs Committee on Infractions sanctioned the Wolverines with the following penalties:
A fine equivalent to the anticipated loss of all postseason competition revenue sharing associated with the 2025 and 2026 football seasons
10-year show-cause penalty for former head coach Jim Harbaugh
8-year show-cause penalty for former staffer Connor Stalions
Additional game suspension + 2-year show-cause penalty for head coach Sherrone Moore Four years probation
3-year show-cause penalty for former assistant Denard Robinson
$50,000 fine, plus 10% of the budget for the football program
A fine equivalent to the cost of 10% of the scholarships awarded in Michigan's football program for the 2025-26 academic year
A 25% reduction in football official visits during the 2025-26 season
14-week prohibition on recruiting communications in the football program during the probation period
The committee, a group independent of the NCAA but charged with prescribing penalties for violations, did not include in its sanctions a ban from the postseason or any vacated victories or championships despite asserting in its findings that "a postseason ban is required in this case." The Wolverines won the Big Ten and College Football Playoff titles in the months after the NCAAs investigation began in October of 2023.

(8,841 posts)Do the coaches and the staffer have to pay? That coach is extremely wealthy.
Is the rest of the school that is not football liable ?

(15,813 posts)ESPN is estimating it will be around $20 million.
The head coach and staffer behind it no longer work there.

(1,485 posts)but are now the pariah they should be. Cheated their asses off to win a nat'l championship and basically got away with it. Harbaugh is pound scum: he reminds me of Trump.

(64,104 posts)Seems to me it was less punishment for Michigan and more of the NCAA setting a price for cheating.
I am getting so tired of money ruining everything

(1,678 posts)Just to add a little context. The backstory is an interesting Spy v Spy cloak and dagger operation.
First to be clear Michigan was charged with Advanced Scouting. Sign Stealing is actually permissable and as WVU coach Rich Rodriguez explains most teams have a couple guys on staff who specialize in sign stealing..

Getting back to the timeline and backstory we start in 2015. Jim Harbaugh does a good job of turning around Michigan football but gets crushed by Urban Meyer and the Ohio State Buckeyes.
The next couple years with new defensive coordinator Don Brown the game (OSU-Michigan) is much closer but OSU still prevails.
Urban Meyer then hires new offensive coordinator Ryan Day .. Ryan Day had previously worked with Michigan defensive coordinator Don Brown at Boston College.
So with a pretty good knowledge of Michigan's defensive signs and system but mostly because of their great talent and Ryan Day's scheme .. OSU starts crushing Michigan again..

To put a bow on this timeline..
Harbaugh and Michigan football hit rock bottom during the COVID season. So Harbaugh replaced nearly his entire coaching staff and unleashed Connor Stalions. The rest is history.
Connor Stalions explains part of his process..
