VW introduces monthly subscription to increase car power
15 August 2025
Liv McMahon
Technology reporter
German car making giant Volkswagen (VW) has introduced a subscription for UK customers wanting to increase the power of some of its electric cars.
Those who buy an eligible car in its ID.3 range can choose to pay extra if they want to unlock the full power of the engine inside the vehicle.
VW says the "optional power upgrade" will cost £16.50 per month or £165 annually - or people can choose to pay £649 for a lifetime subscription.
The firm said it was "offering customers choice" with the feature.

People pay a lot more than that on ICE cars for aftermarket power upgrades

(171 posts)Anyone notice subscription is the business model going forward for everything from software to clothing to, apparently now, vehicle features? If not leasing the item, you lease any service or help you might need with the product after the ever shortening warranties expire. The future is small homes and smaller apartments filled with things you rent, but never completely own, and can't use without data and features managed and executed on elsewhere. Talk about a "lease on life".
We'll have capitalism (not communism) where no one owns anything directly. Instead of a government telling you what you want and need, it will be companies instead.

Already, many 'receipts' are not full documentation of purchases, but a link to data on the merchant's servers. If you bought something a WalMart and got an e-receipt, don't count on the info being there now.
Pretty hard to enforce those warranties without actual receipts, and the receipts are likely to vanish before the warranties are up.

(238 posts)Multiple things to consider, but with more HP the driver may be more inclined to use it which results in more aggressive driving. The other element I would consider is the effect on tires.
All-electric vehicles are inherently heavier due to the weight of the battery and exert more torq on the tires and wear them out quicker. A person that pays for this upgrade will go through tires even more quickly.

(6,082 posts)I tell my insurance company my car is X with these amenities and features. They say okay pay Y per year. Then I go back to the dealer and add a large HP boost. Moving my car I to the performance car class.
They'll just ask for the latest running startup configuration of your computer on wheels to be upload to them before any claims work can begin. Then they have documentation of insurance fraud if it occurred, if they want it. So, don't get into a wreck I guess?
