On July 8th Cleveland was 15.5 games behind Detroit in the standings. By August 7th, following a sweep of the Mets in New York, they had narrowed the lead to 6 games.
Surprising, and outstanding, coming off a 10-game losing streak.

It keeps things interesting, you know?

.. Darn Soto!!
At least it was a good hit from a good hitter. It would have been way worse if it was an infield hit that someone just tripped over.
Although I wonder if Kenny Lofton would have caught it
..
Cleveland is hanging in there, despite losing their top notch closer and journeyman starting pitcher due to the gambling investigation.

(32,514 posts)Not the first near miss this week from him in CF. It would have been a spectacular play had he caught it.
Did you see Kayfus dive for that fly out in RF earlier? Don't think Nolan Jones would made that one.
My brother and his friends are livid over Soto's "smirk" following the HR. His team got swept by another with about 1/4 the payroll, yet he smirks for breaking up a no-hitter. Soto needs a little chin music to go with that smirk. Next year.
Can you imagine if the playoffs hinge on not having Clase in the BP? Imagine the scenario: Cade Smith is pitched out and Gaddis, who's been on and off all season, can't close them out?
Got to hand it to Vogt and his staff for turning it around. Players too, for working hard to turn it around.
If MLB banned Pete Rose for betting on games in which he did not play, it would have to ban Clase and Ortiz for participating in bets in which they did.

(38,162 posts)would call for a lifetime ban. I think we have seen the last of Ortiz and Clasé. Stupid, stupid! Clasé for sure, throwing away a brilliant career. And you know the Dumpster would never push the commish to reinstate them like he did Pete Rose, for obvious reasons.
Smith looks like the heir apparent to the closer role. I think he will be OK, but boy how do you replace someone like Clasé in his prime.
We have seen some promise from new bullpen guys like Enright, Allard, Sobrowski. Festa and Gaddis are inconsistent. Enright had his first career save a couple nights ago. Inspiring story with him, coming back from a cancer diagnosis.
Kayfus looks good so far. Great catch by him yesterday. Jones might have made it, but hes been a bit inconsistent in the field lately too.
Just wait until Smirky Boy gets an earful from Guards next time the Mets play in Cleveland

If Soto wants to be a dick, so be it. Its his own reputation hes trashing. Shouldnt result in his life being endangered.
Now, a 100 mph heater in the ribs, thats a different matter
