Related: About this forumGo Brewers!
Seven weeks ago (June 16), after starting the season 0-4 and almost literally getting the snot beat out of them by the Yankees, the Brewers had climbed over .500, yet were 5 1/2 games behind the Cubs, who were 16 games over .500 at the time and the consensus pick to run away with the NL Central. Today, the Cubs have improved a bit to 18 games over .500
and yet are now 4 games behind the Crew, who just finished a 6-0 road trip. Yeah, against the lowly Nats and Braves, but good teams are supposed to beat poor teams, right? The Brewers are also 6-0 against the Dodgers this year, so its
On May 19, the Crew was a muddling 23-25; entering play today, 70-44. So theyve won 47 of their last 66 games, and theyre still getting very little attention from the baseball media on a day-to-day basis (although they did get a shout out for their hot streak). Still
Oddsmakers in Vegas even had them as underdogs for their last game against the Braves. Hah!!
How do they do it? Great defense, good starting and relief pitching, batters who usually put the ball in play, good speed, smart base running
and few home runs, but just enough from surprising players not known for being sluggers. And when a player is hurt, they have someone who is just as good (or maybe better!) ready to fill in. Isaac Collins (who?), a minor league rule 5 dump from the Rockies, was NL player of the month in July, and is the best defensive LF in the NL and has perhaps the most rookie RBIs in the NL, or is close to it. Overall, none of their players is having a spectacular season; Yelich is having a good year, with about 21 (?) HRs, but this isnt comparable to his MVP period. (although Andrew Vaughn, acquired from the White Sox where he was having a miserable season and had been sent down to AAA prior to the trade, is currently hitting like the second coming of Mickey Mantle
but hes only been here for 4 weeks.)
Tis a great summer if youre a Brewers fan!
So go ahead and ignore them. See ya in October.

(24,037 posts)He said he and his ESPN colleagues were going through an exercise where they ranked the top 50 MLB players this season. He reviewed his own choices and realized that he didn't have a single Brewer on his list!
That says something about the clubhouse. No real superstars (although every baseball fan knows the name Christian Yelich). It's a true team effort. And the coaches/manager deserve plenty of credit too.
I like seeing small-market teams thrive. Wish it could reach Pittsburgh!
Totally agree. They're a pleasure to follow!

My team sucks but the next best thing is enjoying the Cubs losing by proxy.
I also root for the small market team - all other things being equal

(64,068 posts)While everybody was watching the Cubs and their big names, The Mets started a season ending hot streak somewhere around August 1st.
They had a phenomenal pitching staff, but outside of Seaver and Koosman they were a bunch of Who?s. But day after day they just put up one win after another. teams and seasons like that are fun to watch before the money and attention ruins them.

(74,068 posts)That's incredible. That's a 115 win full season pace!
No wonder they caught & passed my Cubs.
Cubs are still playing at a 94 win pace & getting their doors blown off.

(74,068 posts)I don't see him doing anything to get them out of this full.
The Brewers are winning 3 of 4 and the Cubs have lost 5 of their last 6 series.
Got guys that were lighting it up in June hitting .170, .200 & .220 over the last 3 weeks.
No lineup shuffles, no small ball, no extra aggressive baserunning.
I heard they scored 40 runs in their last 15 games. But, scored 20 of those in 4 of the 5 wins. Twenty runs in the other 15 games. No wonder they've gone from 2nd best record in baseball to 7.5 games back.

(620 posts)It's about a Washington Senators fan who hates the Yankees. As a Cubs fan, I have my own phrase:
Fucking Brewers!
Now, I respect them. They're good every year even when it seems they shouldn't be. But I have good reason to hate them. They're always in the way... fucking Brewers!
