At least in 2003, we could blame Bartman, whether it was really his fault or not.
We had a scapegoat.
Would Alou have actually caught it? Could they have scored runs afterward that they didn't.? Could the pitching staff have they regained their composure? We can't know, but we did have Bartman to kick around.
In '84, they just melted down.
