Dizzy Dean Funny Story

In Game 4 of the 1934 WS Dean was tasked to be a pitch runner. While running between 1st and 2nd Dean was hit in the head by Tiger's SS Billy Rogell who was attempting to complete a DP. Dean was knocked out cold by the throw and was carried from the field.

This incident led to the fabled headline in the newspaper the next day: "X-RAYS OF DEAN'S HEAD SHOW NOTHING."

as Dizzy and Pee Wee Reese were the two I first saw calling the MLB Game of the Week. They were great together and we definitely loved hearing Dizzy sing “Wabash Cannonball.”

after he was hit and knocked out. There is film out there.

He had periodically been used as a pinch (pinch not pitch) runner at other times during the 1934 season, but neither manager Frankie Frisch, not captain Leo Durocher put him in the game. Dean made the substitution on his own.

…and finally got my chance a couple of years ago after undergoing an MRI for a mild-ish concussion. "They looked inside my head & found nothing." Always got a laugh.
