Yusmeiro Petit replaces Matt Cain, lifts SF Giants to 6-0 win over Padres

Yusmeiro Petit replaced Matt Cain and rescued the Giants again.

This time, Petit wasn’t one pitch shy of a perfect game, but he did throw three perfect innings and lasted six to lift the Giants to a 6-0 victory over the Padres on Tuesday night – as an emergency replacement for Cain.

Cain was scratched after cutting his right index finger in the clubhouse kitchen. He said he dropped a knife and cut himself when grabbing for it, leaving a half-inch gash on his fingertip. Petit was informed an hour before the game that he’d start, not enough time to discuss opposing hitters with catcher Hector Sanchez.

“We saw him do this last year, and it’s fun to watch,” manager Bruce Bochy said.
