Taken yesterday morning at Lancaster County Central Park, Lancaster, PA. This one got neglected while reviewing a few hundred shots yesterday afternoon. She was pretty far away, but it's not a bad exposure. One of my favorite birds.

(14,261 posts)I heard one this morning pecking an electric pole for a floodlight in my yard.
I looked out and sure enough there it was.
They are destructive and they are fast about it.
Between them and the carpenter bees wood gets a drilling around here.

(37,201 posts)These bids are notoriously shy so you must have been in the right place at the right time! I’ve only been lucky enough to see one in my backyard once.
I alway thought that this is the bird Woody Woodpecker was based on.

Cartoonist Walter Lantz said the character was inspired by an acorn woodpecker.

(11,780 posts)Sometimes someone would report seeing one but it would end up being a pileated woodpecker. Don’t remember the name now. Maybe an ivory billed woodpecker?

(6,268 posts)but was seen again in Arkansas in 2004 and hasn't been seen feather nor tail of since. I had to look it up but well remember the controversy.
