I killed a bird with my car just now

Last edited Tue Aug 19, 2025, 02:37 PM - Edit history (1)

I stopped and picked it up, hoping it might just be stunned. I don’t even know what kind it was, maybe an eastern wood pee-wee. I feel awful.

They are under so much threat, and their numbers keep dwindling. Every death seems like a hit to the survival of them all.

One night I was getting out of "Dodge" after my sister in law showed me evidence my so called wife was cheating. So I drove five states away. I heard a slight bump on the grill. At a truck stop one future Trumpster said "That's a cool eagle you have on your grill." I cried most of the way home after that. For the eagle, not for my soon to be ex.

Sometimes it feels like the awfulness is just thrown at us all in a storm. I really am sorry you had that done to you.

It was decapitated and its wings kept flapping for a second or two. Yuck. Poor bird.

Not your fault. It would have been quick for the bird in your case.

My cousin and I would pick up birds that had flown into her cottage kitchen window and try and nurse them back to health. It involved getting my doctor mother on the case. She grew up on a farm with chickens and hated, hated, birds of any kind. I don't know that we ever saved a bird. We buried at least 2. Such is the precarious situation of nature meeting civilization.

We had a hummingbird fly into the screened in porch and get his beak stuck in the screen. By the time I saw it, it had died or starved. A bigger, heavier bird would have fallen and then escaped. The hummingbird was so light it just got stuck. Afterwards, my dad put up a lifesize, metal cat ornament with green gem eyes to scare the hummingbirds away from that part of the garden.

You can't do anything about driving to mitigate what happened to you. Just bad luck.

I try to watch out at just the spot. It’s a regular bird crossing. I let myself be distracted.
