You might enjoy this, shows what can be done on a low budget with sufficient shade tree engineering..

I use a Series wound motor in my VW Bug. Great torque, never use lower than second gear.

I have a mid 8 second car, so I have a understanding how fast that really is. 6.90's incredible.
