Danger, injury and death are accepted as part of motocross sport, even for children

Forty-two teenage boys with helmets and colorful uniforms pushed their dirt bikes to the starting line.

They were among about 1,000 riders, who must be at least 4 years old to race. The site is Loretta Lynn’s Ranch, about 70 miles west of Nashville and home to the most prestigious event in amateur motocross — the Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship.

On the opening day of racing for the 44-year-old annual event held July 28-Aug. 2 event, the teens revved the engines of 250cc motorcycles built to soar off jumps and tear around the 1.1-mile dirt track. It’s regarded among the safer tracks in amateur motocross despite three riders having died since 2008 from injuries suffered while racing.

The field was full again this year, organizers said, as were 42 gates with riders baking under the sun before the first 250 B race of the week.

Organizers resisted calls to leave one gate empty in honor of Aidan Zingg, a 16-year-old rising star who died June 28 during a mid-race crash in Mammoth Lakes, California. Zingg won the Supermini 2 national championship last year and would have graduated to 250 B this year.

The youngest class of riders are 4-6 years o;d and ride small bikes that travel up to 30 mph. WHAT is wrong with parents letting their kids do this ??????

They may be able to go 30mph on a long straight, but on a track, they will not be close to that speed, not on turns, much less jumps.

It's a beautiful sport. The best for me. But I'm biased bc I used to race when I was young.

For me the biggest problem happened when the industry went from 2 stroke bikes to 4 stroke bikes. What's the difference? To go fast on a two stroke you need to work harder, you develop better skills in the process. With the modern 4 strokes, going faster is much easier which leads to overconfidence and more crashes.

if we outlaw motocross for kids we should also outlaw showing livestock, playing most contact sports (football, hockey, etc) and so on and so forth. On one hand I'm a live and let live guy, but I also hate to see adults put their kids in a position to get hurt or worse. Like I said...it's not a black or white issue at all.

Motocross is putting kids on motorized machines at a very early age. While I'm not necessarily in favor of little kids playing tackle football (my grandson didn't play tackle until he was 10 or 11, which I still think is kind of young), at least they have protective equipment. Same goes for hockey, and neither one inovolves motorized machines. Apples and oranges, buddy.
