A Shout Out to my Home Team!
Last night, the Portland Thorns won the NWSL Championship. The captain, Christine Sinclair is a 39 year old olympian who played her college game at the University of Portland. The League and game MVP was 22 year-old Sophie Smith who scored the winning goal in last night's match.
Women's soccer may not be a big deal in many places, but in Portland, the Thorns draw 20,000 to the stadium on a regular basis. A rowdy and dedicated fan base led by the Rose City Riveters have supported them through a very tough couple of years...marred by disclosures of sexual abuse by their coach, and a front office determined to cover it up.
The team and their fans are moving on. Hopefully the team's owner will move on as well.
