Hag stones

My daughter brought me some rocks and fossils from her recent beach vacation. One of the stones had a round hole in it. She had visited a rock shop when she was on vacation and was told that rocks like that are called hag stones. I hadn't heard the term before, but on checking, learned that there is a lot of lore connected to these stones. The hole can prevent misfortune from entering your house, provide a window to another world, draw in luck.

I spent some time yesterday creating a hanging with this little treasure. I thought since the hole is key to its effects, I shouldn't do things the obvious way, so I wound string around the edges, leaving an end to hang. I added some glass and pottery beads, and used a brass fishing leader for the hanger. I hung it in the kitchen for now.

I enjoy folklore, especially if of involves natural objects. In these times, I'm open to assistance and comfort from all sources. I enjoyed learning about something new to me

. . . by centuries of exposure to dripping water, usually in a cave.

The action of the waves and scouring sand erodes holes in the rock. It would surely take a long time. First for the rock to form, and then for it to erode
