McAllen nun to be released after being detained on her way to Mass, legislators say

McALLEN, Texas – A South Texas nun was detained Sunday by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement while reportedly on the way to celebrate Mass, Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church said on Facebook.

Sister Letty was released from ICE custody Sunday night after she was detained earlier that morning, according to Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-San Antonio, and Rep. Monica De La Cruz, R-Edinburg.

Both said they communicated with the Department of Homeland Security and expressed gratitude for the swift resolution.

“As I have repeatedly said, our immigration enforcement should target violent criminals,” De La Cruz said in an earlier post. “A Catholic nun on her way to church is not a threat to our community.”

I attended Catholic school from first to eighth grade. Old timey nuns. I am going to have to disagree with this statement.

year but it was the same nun in disguise. Out would come the 10 foot ruler to smack your knuckles from 20 feet. Don't know how she did that. Her mere presence when you were disciplined for doing something wrong, was enough to induce cardiac failure. Some years she was an angel who never said a cross word nor need a ruler, but who commanded the respect of the students by her presence.

But she and her cohorts were good for my upbringing and I fondly, smilingly, remember those days starting well over 70 years ago and I'm glad my parents sent me to parochial school. The only thing I would change would be my behavior. I should have been better and should have gone back to thank those women for the amazing job of having 50+ students in a class, all paying attention and, most importantly, learning, while she made sure each child received the love and attention they needed and always went home with the correct hat and coat. And all this because of their faith. It definitely was not because of the money or the working conditions.

By the way, when I was in first grade, that nun had 50 in the morning class and 55 in the afternoon. Two sets of kids, each going half a day to school, and each learning. That's no joke. I was in the morning class and only 5 1/2 years old, too young for first grade in public school but old enough for parochial school. Never went to kindergarten.

siren.

We never saw the kid again. I guess he transferred to a public school where teachers couldn't hit kids.

Catholic education abuse wasn't just priest pedophilia.

And in saw a WW2 veteran gym teacher lift a kid off his feet and slam him into a locker after the kid told him to go fuck himself.

Asked to repeat himself, the kid declined

This gym teacher had survived the war in the Pacific in the Marines island hopping.

He had great war storues.

In fact, we called him "War Story Cory".

Here in my town, the Catholic Erie Benedictine Nuns have long been dedicated to positive change and social justice.

They have put their bodies on the line, and feed the homeless here. Unlike many non Catholic ministries, they do not push their religion on the poor as a condition for receiving help.

"Benedictines for Peace, organized in fall 1981 in Erie, Pa., led to national and regional groups, such as Pax Christi, advocating on behalf of peace and respect for all life. At a September Chapter meeting in 1986, our community voted to endorse the Sanctuary Movement for refugees from Central America, with emphasis on Guatemalans and El Salvadorans, who needed protection from persecution in their homelands. We offered shelter and supplies for refugees and wrote letters of appeal to the president, Congress, bishops and others, seeking federal and state aid on the refugees’ behalf.

Social justice action has increased in scope and intensity these three past decades as our community continues involvement in various social justice causes, taking on new ones as needs arise. As of 2024, the community even has a director of social justice, Elizabeth Reum, to coordinate our efforts. You can learn more about our social justice efforts, past, present and future".

I attended Catholic school from 1st to 8th grade.

I never saw drugs until I went to public school in 9th grade in the 70s.

And yes, I got whacked a couple of times.

It was probably because orange was being a little asshole.

by the nun's abusive treatment during her elementary years in Catholic school. Fortunately her parents finally relented and transferred her into the public school system.

And I am very saddened to hear of this, and am glad your wife's parents removed her from the situation.

I hope the incidents were documented and investigated by the appropriate authorities.

That said, this threads subject is ICE kidnapping a nun based on her skin color, but somehow seems to have become a thread on justification for such abuse of power based on some posters (not meaning you) opinions of a religion that include over 17% of the worlds population.

... that poses no threat to them, and Nosferatu wants quotas filled, so innocents count, too. Confronting actual bad guys might make them go foo-foo in their tutus.
These guys are chosen for their psychotic tendencies; they are not trained LEOs. And, by now, there can be no doubt that terrorizing whole communities is a prime objective. Christ, Vought even came out and stated that unequivocally in Project 2025.
The most corrupt Supreme Court in history will make it hard, but the fate of the nation depends on crushing the lawless Republican Party in the mid terms, and that's just for openers. Trump is the worst thing to happen to this country since the Civil War, and getting rid of him and his diseased horde in '28 is going to be a battle, but it has to be done. NO pearl-clutching!

The Nazis in WW2 routinely rounded up nins and sent them to the camps.

History repeats itself.

"The Convent Children: The Rescue of Jewish Children in Polish Convents during the Holocaust"

". It is also worth bearing in mind that sheltering Jewish children placed all Christian inhabitants of the convent in mortal danger and required them to share their scanty provisions."
