because what Pig is doing is presenting a list of things needed. A list is singular even though its contents are plural. Had Pig said "The things you need...", then we've gone onto plural.

Having said that, I have to inform you that my major was mathematics.

...I would humbly suggest there is a missing colon, and a proper sentence would read:

"What you need is: critical thinking skills, the desire for knowledge, a dose of healthy skepticism, and a willingness to always question the answers."

Emphasis added because...REASONS! (a Borderlands 2 reference)

Added for full disclosure: My major was neither Math nor Grammar.

"I'm going to the supermarket to get: bread, cheese, coffee and jam." I've never seen anyone else use such a construction.

Sorry, I don't get the Borderlands reference (not much of a television(??) watcher.

Added for even fuller disclosure: I was kicked out of the Boy Scouts as a kid.

...the "Is-a-listers" and "Are-wellians".

Fullest disclosure: I never was a comedian either.

More fullest disclosure: Borderlands 2 isn't even a TV show, it is merely a video game:
