This has been the subject of *many* threads here over the last 2 years, and there is no other way. It's just one of those life-sucks-and-then-you-die kind of thing.
I hate the "My Subs" lighting up too -- I quickly tap on "My Subs" to turn it off, and then the back button to get back to where I was. I wish I didn't have to do that innumerable times a day, but again it's just one of those life-sucks-and-then-you-die situations. It's a consequence of subscribing to any forums or any people.
I do subscribe to a few forums of high interest and low traffic -- and I see those in my left column in the "Subscribed Forums" section following the main forums. Their folders turn yellow when a new OP is made to the forum, and that's all the notification I want. The "My Subs" tab at the top of the page is totally redundant and unnecessary, and is like shining a 200 watt yellow light in my face that I am never in the mood for.
ETA - when one clicks on the "My Subs" tab, there is a "Filter by forum" section and "Filter by Person" section and a "CHECK ALL/NONE" checkbox and a "FILTER" button, all on the right hand side of the page. I've tried every possible combination of checkbox unchecking and button pressing, but none of what I did sticks. When I go to another page and then back to the "My Subs" page, they are all checked again.

(23,059 posts)The My Subs tab lights up whenever a new thread is posted in a forum you are subscribed to, or whenever a thread is posted by a person you are subscribed to. If you are not subscribed to any forums or people, the tab will not light up.
The "Filter" options in the right column of the Subscriptions page do not affect the My Subs tab. They are for filtering your current view of the Subscriptions page. So for example, if you want to quickly see recent threads by a single person you're subscribed to, you would only check the box next to that person's name, and then only that person's threads will be displayed on the Subscriptions page. But that filter only applies to the entries on the Subscriptions page, it has no other effect.
You can remove subscriptions by either going to the forum you are subscribed to, or going to the profile of a person you are subscribed to, and clicking the "Unsubscribe" button at the top. You can reach those forums and people by clicking the links in the right column of the Subscriptions page.
