DU Community Help
Related: About this forumI've been having a hard time posting images.
I was using PostImages, but I'm told it shows as a blank blue box to all but me.
I tried Imgur and get this link:
https://imgur.com/a/q4eQ81Z
I was told to add "jpeg" to the link, but I get this:
I don't want to pay a subscription. What am I missing?

(20,785 posts)If so, Google "webp to jpeg". Go to that conversion site, convert the pic to jpeg, and then download the jpeg to your computer.
THEN, use post images on the converted jpeg file.

(193,387 posts)and it always ended up as either a blank or a blue box.
Post Images seems to have either a time limit on the jpegs or shuts down political type images.

I switched to meme generator

The URL looks like this except replace the "x" at the beginning with an "h"

I have a free account at Imgur, but I don't know if that's necessary (I found it helpful when I was first starting out).

(59,334 posts)I was wrong about the "add .jpeg", but I did give you the alternative that worked and continues to work. It turns out that the link to the page is a different combo from the link to the image. My first suggestion was wrong and my second suggestion worked, which I proved by posting the image.

One of the fundamental principles of dealing with computer issues is to keep trying alternatives when they are offered or when you think of them. Another principle is to read guidance and documentation carefully if a first reading doesn't yield success.

(59,334 posts)Did you clear your browser memory cache? I expect you did not.
It is possible that postimage might 1) Throttle after a certain number of images, but 2) retain the IP address of the person uploading and show the image even if they clear their cache.

(21,242 posts)I use imgbb.com and postimages.org.
Both work, of course, webp has to be converted because DU does not show it.
Steps omitted.
I use imgbb because I can fish out an image link that I save on the computer and it works everywhere. But I have to fish it from "src=" and so on.
Imgbb can be terribly slow, I think because it uses a URL shortener, and DU uses a magic firewall.
Postimages seems to be snooping out political content lately. But mostly works.
I resorted to another host once when it did.
No permanent solution. Eventually, everything changes.

(59,334 posts)The poster has the image in their browser cache so they always see it. If they clear their browser cache it will probably go away, unless maybe two things: the browser is at the same URL and postimages server remembers the URL. The latter is a big if and since I don't use postimages I'm not inclined to experiment.
I kinda sorta doubt postimages filters on political content, but again I haven't experimented so I can't say.
Premium (paid) postimage uses will always see all postimages.
The problem is that (I am almost completely certain) postimages throttles image traffic. So an image can posted and the first 100 (or some similar number) of people will see it just fine and it sits in their browser cache so even if the page changes on DU, they continue to see the image. But any more people looking at it get the blue square. The poster thinks "What's your problem, I checked and I see it just fine."
Don't use postimages: you will be fooled and most of your audience will not see it.

(21,242 posts)A very old post lost an image, IIRC. Fixed it.
Sure would like to find a cure for the situation. This could go on and on. Filing in the "things to reinvent" notebook.
