Rising Sun nun, 79, takes final vows

Jane Bellmyer

NORTH EAST — A member of the Episcopal Carmel of Saint Teresa took her final vows Friday evening in a solemn, but joyous ceremony held at St. Mary Anne’s Episcopal Church.

For Sister Barbara, it signaled the end of a six-year process at which she gave herself over to a life of prayer and service.

“I just feel so blessed by the call God has given me,” she said Friday. “How can I put it into words? I am full of God’s grace.”

The 79-year-old native of Vancouver, British Columbia, has spent her adult life in the church, first joining the Order of Saint Anne in 1957, then leaving the convent and becoming an Episcopal priest.
