The studio wanted someone else. She even held up the first day of shooting! The studio gave in and thought it wasn't going to make any money anyway. Once it was done and they screened the final film, they knew they had a gem. They gave it a limited release in December to qualify for the Oscars, and a wide release in January. It ended up making $122M on a budget of $15M. 6 Oscar nominations and 3 wins!
