Deep in coal country, pondering future without it

This was posted by Brigid in Good Reads - http://www.democraticunderground.com/1016108536#post2

It links to a USA Today article (http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2014/12/06/coal-mining-future/20003199/) about how the decline of coal in Appalachia is affecting Harlan County (KY).

King hollow (my name sake is there, right off of old highway 421). My family settled in Harlan County in 1792 before it was even a county and developed a community now called sunshine which is between the now city of Harlan & Cawood.

To see this area now just makes me want to cry. My Grandparents are buried on a hill overlooking Sunshine. When the coal is gone, the town will be gone.

This is from a fellow from a neighboring town (Pineville).

Here's to you Jimmy.
