Sabrina Ionescu makes WNBA history in return to Liberty
An injury-plagued start to the season didn't prevent Sabrina Ionescu from continuing to establish her greatness in the WNBA.
The former Oregon Ducks star guard returned to the floor for the New York Liberty on Sunday in an 86-64 victory over the Washington Mystics. The final line wasn't dazzling, as Ionescu scored just five points and added three rebounds and three assists in 26 minutes. She came off the bench in her return for the first time since 2021.
However, Ionescu's performance was enough to push her into the WNBA record book as the fastest player in league history to record 3,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 1,000 assists, doing so in her 183rd career game. Ionescu set the record 60 games faster than Las Vegas Aces three-time champion Jackie Young, who previously held the record.
After entering to a roaring applause from the Barclays Center crowd midway through the first quarter, Ionescu grabbed her 1,000th rebound in the win, which was just her second game of the season. She had been sidelined by a lingering back injury. The Liberty have eagerly been awaiting her return, and Oregon fans have been waiting to see her reunite with Satou Sabally on the floor as teammates for the first time since 2020.
