'Hug you one day and lock you up in cages the next': the racism surfacing in TX redistricting fight - Velshi - MSNBC

The ongoing redistricting fight in Texas has exposed some of the racial dynamics in the state. As the Democratic leader in the Texas state House, Gene Wu has been the subject of plenty of criticisms and insults – including accusations lobbed by his Republican colleagues that he’s a communist. Wu tells Ali Velshi that the casual racism that he’s experienced throughout his career is now “spilling out in the open” because of Donald Trump.

Democratic Texas State Rep. Ana-Maria Rodriguez Ramos adds, “These are the same people who will hug you one day but lock you up in cages next, and that is why we have to fight back.” She points out that the new Republican-proposed map will negatively affect many minority communities. “It is not a coincidence,” she says. “They’re attacking our families. They’re attacking our culture and our history,” despite Texas being a majority-minority state. "We do have the people, but we haven't stepped into that power yet,” says Ramos. - Aired on 08/09/2025.
