He was just making informal comments.

Pope Leo has a BS in Math, and a Master's and Doctorate in Religious Studies, etc.
Probably didn't take a lot of English grammar classes.

The content of what he says is the most important thing to consider.

Written and oral language is quite different.
Some countries have a big difference.
The written style is quite formal, and the oral is more street talk.
Quebec is a bit like this.

English is an evolving language and styles and usage changes over time.
So the grammar may shift around over time.
