(1,262 posts)...but I am agitated that, once again, political violence has been embraced as the answer to very strong disagreements.
I'm not going to pretend I'm the most high-minded person, and I believe in fighting the types of odious ideas Mr. Kirk championed as strongly as possible short of using violence or terror, because what we're supposed to do in this country is to work to have the better idea prevail over the worse by making the case for the better idea. Another great strength of ours as a country is we don't accept the argument is won by being the better shot; we've rejected that time and time again, and should reject that now.
There are already kooks on the right trying to gin up retaliation, as there are kooks on the left celebrating this death as a harbinger. That's unacceptable, but just as unacceptable is trying to whitewash what Charlie Kirk was, which I believe was a virulent bigot, and not some sort of benign bear poking devil's advocate. I'm fine with, out of respect, not litigating that case at the present time, but the media needs to stop with the unwarranted construction of his hagiography.
The one thing we all should be able to say is this is a tragedy, it goes against what it means to be someone who loves this country, and all of us reject this as a solution to any of our issues.

I hope we listen.
Violence and retaliation, however they seem to call to us ...... are never the answer.

A lesson in how to move on from rage and the desire for vengeance.
