The Way Forward

If I remember correctly, coming out of WW2 much of Europe's and Asia's industries were destroyed while our unbombed industries were at the peak of war production. After the war we quickly converted our industries to consumer goods while helping to rebuild Europe's and Asia's industrial base and economies.
By the mid 60's Europe's and Asia's industries were new and producing. Much of our industrial base went back to the early 1900's and was old and obsolete with many industries having strong Union contracts. Rather than rebuilding our industrial base and engaging with our Unions Capital decided to send domestic production abroad to exploit the cheap labor and minimal regulations. They wanted all the benefits of production without the associated cost, long term investment and modernization.
But there were problems. Capital had to get shipping and tariff's under their financial and political control. Huge ships and huge trade agreements emerged. To get these agreements into law they bought politicians who promised to treat labor and the environment fairly for protecting Capital. Of course that was bullshit, it never happened.
By the 80's many of our aging obsolete industries collapsed due to the lack of Capital's investment and modernization. I know, I was there. I setup headers that dated back to the 20's and boltmakers to the early 40's. The Rust Belt was born. Much of our domestic production was left to die as Capital shipped their goods in from abroad for the next 60 years. Crappy low-paying service sector jobs replaced good paying manufacturing jobs. The Wealthy got wealthier and more powerful as We The People became economically and politically weaker.
Fast forward to today. The generation in our country that lived through this and knew how to efficiently produce things are retiring. Seeing our declining future, Capital now wants to bring production back to this country. Asia and other parts of the world have become more productive, powerful and independent as Capital's position and global trade flounders. You can't push the State of the Art of anything forward if you're not at the forefront of the game. And in many areas we're not even in the game.
Economic and military might requires us to have a State of the Art economy if we want to be a top player. Our declining capability was caused by decisions Capital made decades ago to have unilateral control, avoid Unions and unravel our economic and political systems to their benefit. That control is still there and has gone unabated. Nothing will change until We The People regain control over our political and economic systems.
Others will try to convince us that Capital is now our savior. I don't believe it. I remember what Einstein said about insanity. Whether we can leap-frog ahead to the forefront of manufacturing again remains to be seen. What ever the answer should be it'll take years to engineer and implement.
Me and my generation who were capable of producing things are fading fast. Much of what we knew and could do is now dated or obsolete. For us to make a cutting edge State of the Art manufacturing economy again, producing cost effective plastic buckets and computer chips, will be very difficult. It'll require us to regain control over our economic and political future. It will require the dethroning of Capital and Our emergence through Class Warfare not the other way around.

(3,411 posts)Hey Joe
(200 posts)I fear we are about to reap the bitter harvest, once again, of the failures that resulted on the bets of corporate greed.
Unfortunately, we didnt lose our manufacturing to any other country. We gave it away.
And getting it back will take years.
Thanks for the post!

(145 posts)I strongly support having all manufacturing in the US. I don't buy much and try to always care for what I buy and repair it if needed. I don't think all others feel the same.
Capital for sure is doing just fine the way things are. They make in other places, and bring it here, pocketing huge profits. No reason to change. The wealthiest 20% do over half of consumption, all they need from the bottom half is servants. The well to do like the goods from elsewhere that are now high quality.
Not sure what's to be done.
