I have little-to-no sympathy for Trump sycophants, but there's supposed to be some ethics in journalism, and part of that is honoring "off the record" conversations, or at the very least saying up-front that you can't guarantee to do so, so that your source knows to keep their mouth shut. Agreeing to confidentiality and then breaching it just for the hell of it is lower-than-low. And, as noted elsewhere, it only means that reporters will have lost at least one and probably many voices of "deep background" in the administration, as I doubt anyone there would ever believe a reporter's promise to keep things off the record again.
