(16,953 posts)80's and early 90's. Saw my first KKK march after only a few months there. I swear my eyes almost bugged out of my head when I witnessed that. Oh, and a few of us took our very religious secretary who was born and raised in S. Carolina to lunch for secretary's day and on the way in there in the car she told a joke to the five of us in the car where she used the "n" word. The others all chuckled and I remember say, "I'm appalled you would say that". Sure put a damper on the celebration. Then there was the first week at my new job where I sat in the lunch room with a black woman about the same age as me and who was new also and no one would speak to me for awhile. I asked a guy from the North who had lived there a bit longer than I had why no one was very friendly to me and he said, "You're in the South now and they can't believe you would sit at the lunch table with her." I could tell you more stories than just these but I'm sure you have enough of your own. I lived there almost ten years.
