45. It is attention seeking and he think it makes him look like a tough, brave leader.

He thinks it makes for a good evening news picture.
And will get plastered all over the internet.

This is a situation which called for empathy, which he does not possess in any form,
so he went to his tough leader act who has been through tragedy himself.
(He got an owie hurt, a boo boo on his ear so he is a brave guy he thinks.)
