CA paid $79B more than it got from the feds in 2023, the second highest total amongst the 19 net payer states (only NY is higher).

12.2% of federal revenues come from CA. All those net taker states would be really screwed if any of the top net payer states (top 7: NY, CA, NJ, TX, WA, MA, MN) got to leave.
