OK, say the best case scenarion happens, then what? [View all]
Say Trump is taken down by the Epstein scandal, files are revealed, a tape of him molesting some poor underage girl(s) are made public, he is impeached, even prosecuted and sent to jail(Vance won't pardon a pedophile). Then what? Vance is now president, and the entire oligarchial system is still in place.
Elections, whether mid terms or presidential, are now a moot point. They have been gerrymandered, voters suppressed and rigged to the point where they're meaningless. As we speak, three states, FL, MO and TX are either undergoing or will undergo even further gerrymandering. Other states are doing this on the down low, without fanfare. The SAVE act will unleash a further wave of voter suppression, and with voting machines and vote counting increasingly suspect(Trump won all seven swing states?!), free and fair elections are quickly disappearing in the rear view mirror.
This leaves us still in the tender clutches of the oligarchs, the tech bros the CEO's, the the rich and powerful who have been dreaming of, and working towards complete control for eighty years. They are this close to achieving their dream and just because their front man gets bumped out of the top spot they're not going to give up. They didn't give up after Nixon resigned, just regrouped and came roaring back with Reagan. With their control of the machinations of elections, they won't even have to regroup, just keep on keeping on to their ultimate goal, complete control. It doesn't matter to them who's front of the house
So where does that leave us, we the people? With few options as far as I can see. We could engage in civil disobedience like this country has never seen, a nation wide general strike combined with protests. This would take unprecedented organization, resources, and a unified community spirit to support each other during this time. This is possible, but the situation in this country would have to get a lot more dire in order for the MAGA contingent to buy in(and yes, we would need them in the fold, they do make up thirty-forty percent of the population).
Another option is civil war, and the way things are going, it might just happen. It would be brutal, bloody, with no guarantee that we would win. It would destroy this country for generations, no matter who won. Out of such a catastrophe we could reshape this country in the image we want, but it's a dicey road to go down.
The last option, and perhaps the most likely to occur is that we let matters continue as they are going, let the system take us deeper and deeper into the morass, until the entirety of it collapses under its own weight. This is what happened to the Gilded Age, it collapsed under its own weight, taking the US and the rest of the world with it into the Great Depression and WWII. We would however need a person like FDR to come in, step up and save the day. Whether that would happen is a coin flip, though I think one weighted inour favor.
No matter what path we take, it's going to be a long, dark journey to get to the other side. I know, I know, this all sounds pessimistic as hell, but having both studied and taught history, and I see too many parallels to other such imperial rise and falls. We are going to have to, no matter what, band together, help and support each other. I'm not saying throw your hands up and quit, I'm saying save what you can, help who you can, and prepare for the worst, because Trump or not, it's coming.
