I am still glad that my NYC-based daughter went through all the appointments and paperwork with the Consulate of Germany in New York to get German citizenship for her two sons, now ages 2 and 4. We got our daughters dual citizenship within 2 months of being born, and she has kept her dual citizenship (Germany/USA) current as well, so if for some reason she would ever need treatment that she can get in Germany as a German citizen that she can't get as a U.S. citizen in New York, all she needs to do is hop on the next plane.
