..... skin gets thinner, and your veins are often more difficult to insert an IV. The back of the hand is a favorite site for IVs to be started. It is easier to "strap" your hand to a "board" meant to prevent movement in the IV site.
It is often a chosen site if you are intending to insert an intravenous catheter for an extended test that may require multiple doses of a medication, OR a radioactive tracker that is sensitive to specific tissues, accompanied by an imaging test, like a PET scan or an MRI.
I have specific knowledge of a recent new imaging test using a PET scan and a radioactive isotope that "lights up" prostate cancer cells.
NOW, UNDERSTAND THIS! I stand with everyone who wants to see this evil excuse for a human being to go away for good.
But pointing to the bruising on the back of a hand is pointless. There is no definitive proof that he is knocking on death's door.
The swelling of his ankles and his gait are indicators that all is not well. Additionally, I believe he has an indwelling urinary catheter attached to a leg bag that is typically attached to the calf or ankle on one leg or the other. If you know what you are looking for, it can be pretty evident as the bag becomes fuller.

That dandy hasn't done a day's work in his lifetime. He is weak and flabby from a life of dissipation and junk food.
