I've had the same thought, many times. My addt'l CT is I think they may also be aware of something about the worlds fossil fuel reserves being a lot less than the general public is aware of. Pretty much the day those supplies cannot keep up with demand due to permanent depletion is one where the entire world will forever change, and each individual life will become worth drastically less in the eyes of the powerful (and it will filter down from there). Fact is, there are 8B people on the planet for one reason only, and that reason is fossil fuels (well, that, and sex lol).

I also think TPTB may actually say "we've hit Peak Oil" before the planet actually does, because it will cause a hell of a lot of people's mindsets to change in a way that more reflects their own (one that is more dog-eat-dog and competitive, rather than the more cooperative and generous mindset that liberals tend to have).

I think crypto and AI are also both means by which the population can be culled drastically without the rich having to suffer as much as they otherwise would have due to the population dwindling.
