I'm all for helping young people who find themselves in desperate circumstances. However, decades of experience in the criminal justice system has taught me that self-appointed guardians and advocates are often more concerned with their own power, influence, and funding than they are about actual solutions. A young woman a day before her 18th birthday is a "victim" used to justify increased law enforcement budgets to fight "sex trafficking". The same woman a day after her 18th birthday is a criminal junky used to justify increased law enforcement budgets to fight for fight the surge of drugs and street crime (i.e. prostitution).
