(6,363 posts)My parents told me about it but I witnessed that kind of behavior when we visited my cousins in Calabria back in 2007. One cousin, a devout atheist, was on the Town Council. when the local church had a procession, she was out there leading the way. Whether it was just politics on her part or "just in case", I don't know because she couldn't speak English and we didn't speak Italian so I couldn't ask her a personal question like that without an interpreter.
Belief is in following the precepts of the claimed religion, not making the religion bend to your opinion. Moreover, moving from one religion to another to find one who's distorted view matches yours, is not religion either. If one claims to be Christian but doesn't like the "wokeness" of Christ, one is not a Christian. One can stay or leave a a particular Christian faith based on its rituals but to deny the basic tenets of that religion, means, IMHO, you are not a believer. Religion in that case is just a crutch or, worse, an excuse for your bad behavior.
