Recall on Lipitor/Atorvistatin [View all]

PBS News
@NewsHour
Tens of thousands of bottles of one of the most prescribed drugs in the U.S. have been recalled.

At least 140,000 bottles of atorvastatin, the generic version of Lipitor, have been recalled by the FDA and Ascend Laboratories, the company that distributes the medication in the U.S.

In early October, the FDA announced the recalled pills may not properly dissolve in the body. It labeled the recall a Class II, meaning the faulty medication could cause “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.” Pills manufactured from Nov. 2024 through Sept. 2025 were tested and found to all carry the same defect.

If you’re using a cholesterol-lowering prescription, consult your pharmacist or prescriber, or check your medication for a laboratory name. If it's distributed by Ascend Laboratories, your pharmacist can confirm whether it is one of the recalled products and may be able to offer another version.
