California GOP sue after voters approve Prop 50 measure for new congressional districts [View all]

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California state Republicans have taken legal action after voters on Tuesday approved Democratic-drawn maps for the next three elections, alleging intentional redistricting to favor Latino and Hispanic voters in the way the now-approved districts were redone.

Proposition 50 will temporarily strip power from a voter-approved, citizen-led independent redistricting commission and give it instead to California lawmakers. The Democratic supermajority released new congressional districts that will attempt to make it easier for five more Democrats to win seats and represent the U.S. House of Representatives.

California's Republican Party on Wednesday announced that it filed a federal lawsuit following the passage of Prop 50, arguing the ballot measure is unconstitutional.

At a Wednesday news conference, Assemblymember David Tangipa, attorneys with the Dhillon Law Group and California GOP Chairwoman Corrin Rankin formally announced the lawsuit. They hope to secure a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction to prevent Prop 50's maps from going into effect.
