Back then, you had to present I.D. if you paid with a credit card, or if you wrote a personal check.

I haven't written a check for groceries in about 15 years. And credit cards are secure enough now, it's very rare for someone to ask for I.D. anymore.

And the notion of having to present I.D. if you're paying cash for groceries is just plain loony.
