5. The Republicans were always firmly grounded in the Red Scare post-WWI

The Russian Revolution really freaked them out because socialism had been brewing in NYC's immigrant community since about 1898. They managed to deflect and co-opt the movement with better jobs and a little corporate paternalism. But it still freaks them out.
