In reply to the discussion: Serious Question: Why are some people so worked up/crashing out about Mamdani? [View all]legallyblondeNYC
(128 posts)It's a good, serious question. And here's the answer -- Management is hard. Management of New York City has unique and hard challenges. No question -- Mamdani is a gifted politician. But now it's time to govern. Snow storms. Five boroughs. Garbage management. Rivers, Atlantic Ocean, Long Island Sound. Bridges. Environmental issues. Real estate. Diverse populations that don't always get along. Remember Howard Beach? A target for terrorism - 9/11. Subways that run 24/7 and reach all 5 boroughs and 600 miles of tracks -- subject to those storms, flooding. The UN and thousands of ambassadors and staff -- from countries that hate each other -- that need protection (and a few think the rules don't apply to them). Hundreds of bridges and tunnels -- within the City. Rikers Island. Hundreds of unions with thousands and thousands of union workers. 33,000 police officers. 11,000 fire fighters. Dozens of hospitals. Almost a million school children. Blackouts. Hurricanes. Pandemics -- that enter the US through JFK and require first responders to reach 8.5 million people who are spreading an unknown disease.
Read up on what happened to Mayor Lindsay. In the 1970s, the City just about went bankrupt. Financial crisis. Crime. Grime.
That's why.
