It was mistaken identity, because daisy was actually driving not Gatsby, and killed myrtle, Wilson the mechanic’s wife and Tom’s mistress. Tom pointed Wilson to Gatsby’s house, so in a sense helped kill Gatsby, Daisys old lover from before the war. So daisy and Tom basically killed each others love interests, then skipped town. Wilson committed suicide at Gatsbys mansion after shooting Gatsby in the pool.

Fitzy clearly had fun plotting out the doomscape at the end of the novel!
