3. The Kent State shootings happened on my 18th birthday.

A group of us in Orlando, FL had been protesting the Vietnam War for about a year and never experienced or expected physical harm. Got flipped off regularly and called names, but basically the whole area was very conservative and supportive of Nixon and the war. Kent State changed all of us. Shit got real - quickly. 5 of us traveled to Berkeley in August of '70. Stayed 6 weeks with friends and came home dedicated to our convictions and positive we were on the correct path.
May 4th, 1970...can't say for sure how I'd be different if those students hadn't been shot, but the resolve probably wouldn't have been anywhere near as intense.
