He was probably briefed to quote Lieutenant Colonel Robert Lee "Bull" Wolverton, who led the men under his command in prayer on the eve of D-Day, saying:
We ask only this, that if die we must, that we die as men would die, without complaining, without pleading and safe in the feeling that we have done our best for what we believed was right.
Sadly, the next day Wolverton was machine-gunned to death without touching French soil, suspended in his parachute harness when it got snagged on a tree in a Normandy orchard during the paratroop assault.
