Robeson County, where many Lumbee live, used to be a deep blue county. It swung hard right in recent elections because Trump promised them federal recognition.

The Lumbee have been fighting for federal recognition for a long time. They are opposed by the Cherokee in western NC and other federally recognized tribes.

There is a lot of money at stake. In addition to federal subsidies, recognition means that the Lumbee could open a casino.

Tillis is not running for reelection. The right wingers who control the NC state legislature are very interested in gambling.
