Most of the territory that made up the “German Democratic Republic” was fairly flat or only mildly hilly, and the people there could receive West German TV and radio. The SED regime didn’t like it but there wasn’t much they could do about it. But there was one corner of the country whose geography and topography made it difficult to impossible to reliably get West German broadcasts. Entering their territory with western newspapers and magazines was already forbidden, and any printed matter was seized at any border crossing. But they couldn’t confiscate airwaves.

Guess which part of East Germany had the greatest percentage of loyal, true socialists? The little enclave where the people weren’t exposed to any other facts or points of view, of course. Heil Honecker, ours is the only truth you need to hear. And so they did. This doesn’t mean they were all bloodthirsty sadists celebrating every poor wannabe refugee that their socialist heroes shot down at the Berlin Wall or at the Death Strip. It does mean that they were conditioned to think it was a positive event when it happened.

This part of Germany is the deepest part of southeastern Saxony. The German spoken there has a very distinctive accent that even today makes the skin of most other Germans crawl.
